Terrace Ironwork Many of Sydney’s Victorian era buildings are adorned with beautiful cast iron lacework and wrought iron palisade fences, with intricate patterns. Suburbs like Paddington, Woollahra and Kirribilli have rows of terraces with beautiful examples of this 19th century ironwork, that is so famous in London. Victorian terraces often had lace balustrades, matching frieze work, columns and other decorative elements made from cast iron. Over a century or two, these castings can break or rust and require refurbishment or replacement. JB Wrought Iron can refurbish original work or where replacement is the better option, replace these castings with either genuine cast iron, or replica, sand cast aluminium. We only use genuine sand cast lacework and never use imitation die cast aluminium. We can restore the appearance to look just like the original cast iron work. Many a terrace house has been architecturally vandalised by the use of low quality, die cast aluminium replacements that not only look fake but have not been installed in the traditional manner, which detracts enormously from the building’s appearance. Victorian terraces and other heritage buildings often have palisade fences with decorative cast iron finials and matching gates. These genuine wrought iron fences and gates often need refurbishment or replacement after over 100 years of service. These classic forms of ironwork need to be restored or replaced by experts if the building’s heritage significance is to be maintained. They are mostly made of puddled wrought iron and need to be treated very differently from the modern day metal, mild steel. Electric welding, galvanising and shot blasting should never be used in their restoration. Often set into sandstone with leaded joints, these wrought iron fences and gates need the expertise of an ornamental blacksmith and a stonemason to be faithfully restored. JB Wrought Iron always aim to add value to a property. While doing things the right way may be initially more expensive, it is far less costly than devaluing a valuable property by doing poor quality work.
